Emergency Prep Weekend – October 3rd
What would you do in case of an emergency?  Have you brushed up on your basic first aid skills?  Join the Scouts in Wrentham on Saturday, October 3rd to answer these questions and more.  Please see Jim Greene for details.

October 24th – 25th – New England Air Museum Sleepover
The New England Air Museum is dedicated to the teaching and preservation of aviation history and technology especially in regard to Connecticut’s contributions.  Located in Windsor Locks, CT, this promises to be a learning adventure and a night of Cub Scout fun.  Please see their website www.neam.org for more information about the museum.  Cost is $30 per person.  Details to follow.

September 17th – Pack Meeting
This will be our first pack meeting of the year.  We have some summertime awards to give out, some upcoming events to discuss (including our fall sleepover), Pinewood Derby cars to hand out, and a special entertainment event:  Animal Adventures of Bolton, MA will be at our meeting, with a collection of animals that may include snakes, an alligator, reptiles, skunks, chincillas, hedgehogs, ferrets, turtles, frogs, and perhaps even a tarantula.  You won’t want to miss this one!

September 20th – Pack Hike
Come enjoy the beautiful Fall weather (we hope!) on the new cranberry bog trail at Patriot Place (behind Bass Pro
Shops).   We’ll meet at 1 p.m. in the Cranberry Path Parking Lot.  Stay to the right of the Bass Pro building and follow the non-paved road to the gravel lot.  This trail is stroller-friendly.  Please contact Laura Giangrande with any questions.

This event is like a cross between Klondike Derby and field day.  We’ll field two teams of Scouts – our Webelo and Bear team will participate in events like fire-building, two-man sawing, bb-shooting and archery.  Our Wolves and Tigers team will do 3-legged races, water relays, and other team-building events   Both teams will help build a wagon, working with our resident handyman, Mr. Washburn.  There will be a campfire, and for those who want to stay, dinner and overnight camping.  The whole family is welcome, for the day and the camping.  The cost for all this fun is only $8.00 per person.  See Chip Washburn or Drew Hoyt for more details.

June 13th – Founders Day
We will be marching in the Founder’s Day Parade which begins at 10 a.m. on June 13th.  Please meet in the parking lot across from the Foxborough Regional Charter School at 9:30 a.m. and join us in promoting Pack 70.  We will also be running our usual fun and games booth at Field Day.  We need as many den members as possible to man the booth.

We’ve scheduled the dens as follows:

• Wolves  ~  11 – 12
• Bears  ~  12 – 1
• Webelos  I  ~  1 – 2
• Webelos  II  ~  2 – 3

Please see your den leaders to volunteer.  We will also need help setting up at 8 a.m. and breaking down at 3 p.m.  Contact Drew Hoyt if you can help out.

June 18th – Ice Cream Social
This will be our last pack meeting before taking our summer hiatus.  Come beat the heat and welcome any new members we may have recruited with an ice cream social.  What could be more fun and say summer better than making your own sundaes?  Hope to see you there.

June 20th (tentative date) – Food Drive
Help us fill the Foxborough Food Pantry, whose supplies have dwindled.  We will need you to collect whatever your friends, neighbors, and household can donate and then we will meet at the Pantry to drop off and help organize the donations. They especially need toiletries such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.  The pantry also takes donations of clothes and gently used toys and games.

July 11th – Annual Fishing Derby
Please join us for our annual Fishing Derby.  Always a fun time, the boys will enjoy lots of fresh air and prizes will be awarded.  This event will take place at Cocassett River Park followed by a Barbeque and swimming (fee involved to swim). More Details to follow.

July 20 – 24 – Camp Horizon
For the discounted price of $180, Scouts get a week of crafts, nature, sports, swimming, bb-shooting and archery.  This year’s theme is Pirates, and will include a special treasure hunt and a feast and campfire.  We need to have a headcount and signups completed by Thursday’s Pack Meeting.

August 22nd-23rd – PawSox Sleepover
A perennial favorite.  We get a clinic with the PawSox players, a great game against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, food and drink tickets, and a campout on the field with a movie on the Jumbo-tron.  All this for $25 per person.  We need a headcount this Thursday at the Pack Meeting.

April 4th – Bottle and Can Drive
Please urge all your friends and neighbors to save up those bottles and cans to donate on April 4th.  All they will have to do beyond saving their containers is put them at the end of their driveways by 9 a.m. on the morning of April 4th.  The Lions will come and pick them up.  What could be easier, and they get the satisfaction of donating to a good cause.

We will need volunteers from the Pack to help sort the containers after the Lions are done collecting.  We will meet at the Town Hall parking lot, off of Liberty Street, at 9:15 a.m. to accomplish this.  Please mark your calendars and plan on helping out if you can.

Scout Day is Saturday, April 11th.  Scouts in uniform receive a patch, and Cubs may register online to sign up for

Den-specific workshops.  Events all day on the “Common”.  Bring your whole family to tour the Village.  Contact Kathy Montal for further information.

May 1st – Stony Brook Night Hike
Join us for a hike among the wildlife after dark at Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Norfolk.  After a 20 minute introduction,

we’ll split into groups and be taken along the trails to listen and learn about nocturnal animals and night vision. 

NO flashlights permitted.  A commitment is needed by April 17th.  Please sign up at a Pack Meeting or contact Kathy Montal at rjnkathy@comcast.net.  More details to follow.

February 19th  – Pack Meeting

February 25th, March 4th, March 11th – Archery
If your scout is 8 or older, he can join in this activity.  Archery will be held for three consecutive weeks at Ace Archers on Morse Street in Foxborough from 7 – 9 p.m.  Please wear Class B uniforms with nothing loose around the chest.  Pre-registration is not required and you may attend all, one, or two of the sessions as you like.  There is a fee of $12 per scout per session.

March 29th – Pancake Breakfast
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year!  We need everyone’s help to make this a success.  Tickets have been distributed to your den leaders, so see them for your ticket packets.  There will be a Pizza Party prize for the den that has the highest average sales, as well as cash prizes for the highest sellers overall.  Terrie McPhee has extra tickets if you need more, or if you have any questions.  You can contact her by phone at 508-698-0663 or e-mail at terriemcphee@hotmail.com.  We will also need volunteers to work the breakfast.  Details to be communicated at the upcoming Pack Meeting.

This month is “Archeology Month” in Massachusetts and a some of the events are local and may be of interest to our scouts. The Hale Reservation in Westwood is hosting three free events this Saturday, October 18th, between 10 AM and 1:30 PM ( schedule below):

My son and I had the chance to see the individual leading the “Flint Knapping and the Art of Stone Tool Making” class at the Museum Of Science last weekend. We were intrigued and will be going. Scouts working on “American Indian Life” (elective 24) may find this of particular interest.

This past Sunday we had a very successful hike through, around and over the Purgatory Chasm. It was awe inspiring, tiring, and, mostly, dry. A great day with peeks at the sun and very few other groups on the trails. It would have been hard to make the experience much better.

The State Park, itself, is truly unique. One of the trails goes directly through a spectacular chasm of boulders, rock walls, outcroppings and weirdly misshapen trees growing from cracks and openings seemingly too small to support such growth This contributes to an otherworldly quality to the place which explains the names of the trails and rock formations. The “Devil’s Corn Crib,” “the Devil’s Pulpit,” .”Lover’s Leap,” and “Devil’s Coffin” are just some of the spots of interest. We even looked back down into the chasm as we left to see a heavy, spectral mist rising from it’s depths. A great pre-Halloween event. One my son, for one, cannot wait to repeat.

It is a shame that the weather kept our Pack’s participation numbers down, but the boys who attended had a blast and got a good lesson in trail safety. A very good day.

Also participating were Matthew Nutting’s Uncle and cousin. His uncle Bill is a Cubmaster and talking with him made me realize how good we have it here in Foxboro.
His pack has only 10 boys, total, as members. Our pack had double that number join us this year alone. You are all to be commended and thanked for keeping Scouting thriving and active in our town. Thank you.

We are pleased to be able to offer this year’s registration at $40.  Your registration fee includes the costs of official registration with BSA National Council, a 12 month subscription to Boys’ Life and Pack 70 dues.

This dues assessment covers about 40% of our actual costs to provide you with this fantastic scouting program for one year.

Fund-raisers such as our can and bottle collection and the pancake breakfast will cover the remainder of expenses.  Your enthusiastic and effective fundraising during the year is the key to keeping our dues low.

Every boy who would like to participate in scouting should be involved in fundraising.  We will never deny a boy participation in our program due to financial constraints.  We will gladly waive this fee if it would prevent a boy from participating.  Alternative arrangements can be discussed confidentially with our Cubmaster, Bob Bradley at 508-543-5395.

Adults are strongly encouraged to be active in the programs and participate in the monthly Committee meeting, usually the second Monday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Bethany Church Library.  The Pack absorbs the cost of registering adults.

Fishing at Cocasset River Park, located off Mill Street (the dog park and Jaycee softball field are located here)

Cookout & Swimming at Cocasset River Recreation Area, also on Mill Street (at the Town Pool / Camp St. Augustine)

 It’s a 2-3 minute drive from one location to the other; there is also a trail that connects the two facilities – it’s a 20-30-minute hike for those who want to walk it.

WHAT TO BRING:
Your own fishing gear (if you have an extra pole or two, bring those along also), Suits and towels for swimming

Now that it looks like the weatherman is finally cooperating, after several years of washouts, we need some help from you to make Pack 70′s participation a success.
 
We need volunteers for early morning duty. We have several tents, tables and games to set up to get our booth ready. This needs to early Saturday morning, so plan on being there at about 6:30. Please reply if you can help out with setup.
 
Schedule of events:
6:30 AM to 9:00 AM setup the Pack 70 tents at Booth Playground – we need all the help we can get.
 
9:00 to 9:30 the Parade assembles at 132 Central Street.
 
11:30 (just after the Parade) 12:30 – Webelos 1 Dens man the game booths!
 
12:30 to 1:30 – Wolves Dens man the game booths!
 
1:30 to 2:30 – Webelos 2 Dens man the game booths!
 
2:30 to 3:30 – Bears and Webelos 1 man the game booths and shut down for the day.

 
Steve Shilcusky and Doug Whitney and all of Den 4 are the leads on this project. I know the leaders have been working hard to make this happen. PLEASE, the times for booth assignments are by Den. Be sure you attend and help out. If you don’t then it falls on someone else to fill in for you and stay extra hours. That is just not the Scout way.
 
The parade. This is a chance for your Scouts to take part in a great tradition. Please be at the parking lot at 132 Central St (across from the Mobil) by 9:30 AM. Any parents who want to march are welcome, but all Scouts are expected. It is a fun and exciting event for them and will mean Many good photo ops. IF you, as parents, do not march, then line the parade route and take pictures. These are scrapbook memories, to be sure.
 
FINALLY, this is all meant to be fun, and it always has been. Working together, laughing together and pulling together as a team is such a big part of the Cub Scout experience. I hope you all have schedules that allow you to participate in this wonderful day.
